Why Do Fingernails Crack? Causes and Solutions

Updated 01:57 PM,Mar 18,2021

Thyroid Gland Disorders

Hypothyroidism is one of the most significant health issues linked to brittle nails. When the thyroid gland is underactive, it fails to produce sufficient hormones, leading to a slowed metabolic rate. According to a Harvard Medical School article, a reduced metabolism results in decreased sweating. Since sweat naturally moisturizes the body, this can lead to dry skin and weakened, cracked nails.

Biotin Deficiency

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, plays a vital role in helping the body metabolize amino acids essential for healthy hair and nails. Individuals with biotin deficiency often experience weak, brittle nails, thinning hair, and hair loss.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders—particularly anorexia nervosa—are common causes of fragile nails and hair. People affected by these conditions have an intense fear of gaining weight, which leads them to severely restrict calorie intake. This often results in insufficient intake of essential nutrients needed to maintain strong, healthy hair and nails.

Other Causes

Several other factors can contribute to brittle nails, including:

  • Fungal nail infections.
  • Overactive thyroid gland.
  • Nail psoriasis.
  • Reactive arthritis.
  • Iron deficiency.
  • Heatstroke.
  • Frequent hand washing.
  • Repeated trauma or injury to the nails.
  • Exposure to chemicals such as nail polish remover.
  • Prolonged use of nail polish.
  • Aging.
  • Constant exposure to moisture, such as frequent swimming or dishwashing.
  • Seasonal climate changes; as temperature shifts occur, the body—and nails—must adapt.
