Medical alcohol refers to alcohol used for medical and disinfecting purposes. It primarily comes in two main forms: ethyl alcohol (commonly known simply as alcohol, spirit, or ethanol), with the chemical formula C2H5OH.
Additionally, 2-propanol (also known as isopropyl alcohol), commonly referred to as cleaning alcohol, has the chemical formula C3H7OH.
Medical alcohol must have a specific concentration range between 60% and 90%, neither higher nor lower. This means it must be diluted only with water. The optimal concentration for both types is 70%. A pure alcohol would evaporate too quickly, leaving insufficient time for effective disinfection. Conversely, a low concentration would not be strong enough to disinfect properly.
Ethanol is also used in perfume production, but in this context, the key requirement is rapid evaporation while preserving the fragrance. Therefore, highly concentrated, undiluted alcohol with concentrations above 95% is preferred.
This high concentration allows the alcohol to evaporate instantly upon contact with the skin, effectively dispersing the scent. This distinction in concentration is the primary difference between medical alcohol and perfumery alcohol.
In perfume manufacturing, concentrated ethanol is typically not pure but blended with other alcohols and various additives. These additions serve multiple purposes: enhancing the longevity of the fragrance, improving skin absorption (e.g., using isopropyl myristate), and helping dissolve essential oils through organic solvents.
Thus, medical alcohol consists of either ethanol or isopropyl alcohol diluted solely with water—two distinct types with no third option medically. In contrast, perfume alcohol is a complex blend of different alcohols, often centered around ethanol, though manufacturers may use alternatives like methanol or propanol, which also evaporate rapidly upon skin contact.
The presence of other alcohols in perfumes can make them toxic or even fatal if ingested, especially if they contain methanol. Some ethanol is deliberately altered to render it unfit for consumption, and these additives can also harm the skin, making them unsuitable for perfumes. Consumers should always check ingredient labels for safety.
While medical-grade ethanol is relatively safe compared to other alcohols, it should still not be ingested due to its intoxicating effects and potential for alcohol poisoning, particularly in children. Isopropyl alcohol is especially dangerous and can be lethal to young children. It should be kept out of reach, and hands of children who suck their fingers should never be disinfected with any type of alcohol.
For disinfection purposes, the origin of ethanol—whether from biological or plant-based sources—is irrelevant, as both types disinfect equally effectively. However, in perfume production, the source matters significantly. Ethanol derived from corn is ideal for enhancing the desired fragrance because it has virtually no odor itself.
