Difference Between Cast Iron and Steel

The primary distinction between cast iron and steel lies in their composition and production. Steel is produced from iron ore and metallic scrap, forming an alloy primarily composed of iron with controlled carbon content. In contrast, gray cast iron is the most widely used form of cast iron, accounting for over 80% of total cast iron production. It mainly consists of carbon in the form of flake graphite, giving it a gray appearance. Gray cast iron has a relatively low melting point (1145–1250 °C) and minimal shrinkage during solidification. Its strength and hardness are comparable to those of carbon steel, and it exhibits excellent shock absorption capabilities.[1]


Both cast iron and steel are iron-carbon alloys. Alloys are mixtures of metals or combinations of metals with other elements. Steel is an iron-based alloy containing a specific amount of carbon, whereas cast iron is a hard, gray metal with an unspecified carbon content. Practical experience and research have demonstrated significant industrial value in both materials, leading to their widespread use in construction and manufacturing.

Carbon Content

Cast iron typically contains around 4% carbon, while steel contains less than 2% carbon. The carbon level in steel is precisely controlled during production, whereas cast iron can be manufactured with varying carbon levels.


Cost

Cast iron is generally more affordable compared to steel, making it a cost-effective option for many applications.


Melting and Casting Properties

Cast iron has a low melting point, which enhances its fluidity during casting and allows it to be shaped into intricate forms without significant shrinkage upon cooling. This makes it highly suitable for mold casting. Additionally, elements such as chromium are often added to iron to create specialized alloys with distinct properties—such as stainless steel. Overall, cast iron remains more economical than steel, features a lower melting point, and is easily cast into complex shapes.


Material Properties

Steel is known for its moderate ductility and relatively high toughness. On the other hand, cast iron is brittle but excels at absorbing vibrations and noise, especially in its molten state. Due to its excellent casting ability, cast iron is commonly shaped into complex components used in furniture, gates, and industrial machinery. Although cast iron is extremely hard, it fractures easily under impact. In contrast, steel produces fine shavings when cut and is more malleable and workable.


Strength Characteristics

There is ongoing debate about the relative strength of cast iron versus steel. Some argue that steel is stronger, while others believe they are comparable in performance. In reality, cast iron exhibits higher compressive strength, while steel offers greater tensile strength. When comparing the two, steel surpasses cast iron in tensile resistance and corrosion resistance. While steel is not exceptionally strong, it is harder than cast iron.


Applications

Both materials are extensively used in construction and structural engineering. Steel is widely employed in doors, frames, and various industrial components. Historically, cast iron was used for pipes and gutters, and it continues to be used for manhole covers, engine cylinder blocks, heavy cookware, and other construction elements. Meanwhile, steel is preferred in the automotive industry and is utilized across diverse sectors such as tools, cutlery, fasteners, and mechanical parts.
