What Was the Miracle of Our Prophet Joseph, Peace Be Upon Him?

The Miracle of Prophet Joseph's Knowledge in Interpreting Dreams

Allah, exalted is He, revealed in His Book that He granted His prophet Joseph a miracle in interpreting dreams, stating: (Thus did We establish Joseph in the land, so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams).[1] This miracle became evident when he interpreted the dreams of two prisoners, which ultimately led him to the king.[2] When the king had a dream and no one could interpret it, he summoned Joseph after hearing about his ability. [3]

Allah mentioned this event by saying: (Joseph, O righteous one, interpret for us seven fat cows devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain followed by seven dry ones, so that I may return to the people and they may understand. He said: You will sow for seven years consecutively, harvesting what you gather, but leave it in the ear except for a small portion you consume. Then come seven hard years that will consume all you have stored, except a little of what you preserve. Then comes a year in which people will be helped and from which they will extract oil).[4]

Thus, Joseph—peace be upon him—explained the fat cows and green ears as fertile years, and the lean cows and dry ears as barren years.[3] The king’s dream was later fulfilled after Joseph had previously interpreted a dream of one of the prisoners, predicting that the man would become the king’s cupbearer. Joseph asked him to remember him before the king, but the man forgot until the king had a dream and his courtiers failed to interpret it. [5]

Other Miracles of Our Prophet Joseph

Several miracles were bestowed upon Prophet Joseph by Allah, peace be upon him, including:[6]

  • Restoring sight to his father after he had lost his eyesight. Joseph sent his garment with his brothers, asking them to place it on their father’s eyes. Immediately, his vision returned, as stated by Allah: (When the messenger arrived, he placed it on his face, and he regained his sight. He said: Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not know?)[7]
  • The fulfillment of Joseph’s dream through gathering his father, mother, and brothers.
  • Allah informed Joseph about his brothers’ plot to throw him into a well and their future need for food during a famine. Allah revealed this miracle by saying: (You will surely inform them of their affair, though they are unaware).[8][9]

About Our Prophet Joseph, Peace Be Upon Him

Prophet Joseph, peace be upon him, was one of the sons of the prophet Jacob, peace be upon him, and the only full brother of Benjamin from their mother. He was the twelfth among his eleven brothers. From an early age, he stood out for his intelligence and noble character, becoming a favorite of his father due to his wisdom. After his mother’s passing in childhood, Jacob saw a vision in which eleven stars, the sun, and the moon prostrated before Joseph. He interpreted this as a sign that Joseph would become a prophet after him, and advised him not to reveal the dream to his brothers to preserve family harmony.[10]

Joseph, peace be upon him, was renowned for his beauty. As reported by Al-Suhaili, he possessed half of all earthly beauty. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, saw him during the Night Journey in the fourth heaven and described him as being like the full moon on a clear night. He was known for his righteousness, wisdom, honesty, devotion to worship, justice, patience, and endurance. He passed away in Egypt and was buried there, later being transferred to Palestine during the time of Moses, peace be upon him.[10] He was known as Al-Sadiq (the truthful), was absent from his father for forty years (some say eighty), died at the age of 120, and there was a gap of four hundred years between him and Moses.[11]
