iPhone 7 Plus Specifications Explained

Updated 07:28 AM,January 17,2017

iPhone 7 Plus

For photography enthusiasts and fans of large smartphones, the latest iPhone model will be your ideal choice. Apple has launched a new device — the iPhone 7 Plus — running on iOS. While many were disappointed by its design and exterior appearance, those who love photography will find it a unique and exciting option.

Exterior Design

The new iPhone 7 Plus features a body made from 7000-series aluminum, known for its exceptional strength. It comes in new colors such as Jet Black and glossy black, with a 5.5-inch display, alongside previous iPhone color options like silver, gold, rose gold, and a thickness of 7.3 millimeters.

The standout feature of the new glossy black finish is the seamless integration of the aluminum frame with glass particles, creating the illusion of a single unified surface. As a user, you won’t easily distinguish where the aluminum ends and the glass begins. However, be cautious — the glass is prone to scratching, as Apple does not offer scratch protection. If you dislike fingerprint smudges, this particular shade may not suit you, as it tends to attract fingerprints easily. Many users feel the external design hasn't changed significantly for the third year in a row, with some even saying it feels like another iPhone 6.

Innovative Redesign of the Home Button

You won’t physically feel the traditional home button anymore; it has been replaced with a pressure-sensitive design powered by a new processor called the Taptic Engine. This allows you to experience subtle haptic feedback for notifications, which can also be customized for specific alerts. This feature offers great potential for app developers. Additionally, Apple removed the traditional headphone jack in favor of a wireless audio system and upgraded Touch ID with a faster, more advanced fingerprint sensor.

Water and Dust Resistance

Apple describes this as the first water-resistant iPhone. The device can now withstand exposure to liquids and dust for limited periods (up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter), earning it an IP67 rating. So, while it's safer around water, avoid taking it into swimming pools or showers.

Display

Apple claims this screen is the brightest and most color-rich iPhone display yet, supporting up to 16 million colors. Enhanced with Retina HD technology, it delivers 25% higher brightness and incorporates the same wide color gamut used in digital cinema production. With added color spectrum grading, images and videos appear sharper and more vivid (1920x1080 pixels, 5.5 inches).

3D Touch Feature

This feature enhances interaction by allowing the phone to detect varying levels of pressure on the screen. You’re not just seeing what happens when you press — you actually feel it too, making app navigation more intuitive and tactile.

A10 Fusion 64-bit Chip

The A10 Fusion chip is the fastest ever used in an iPhone, featuring a completely new quad-core processing architecture — two high-performance cores and two efficiency-focused cores. It doubles performance compared to the iPhone 6 while reducing power consumption, extending battery life. Apple claims users get up to two additional hours of battery life on the iPhone 7 Plus compared to the iPhone 6S.

Storage Capacity

Apple discontinued the older 16GB model and increased storage options for the new iPhones, offering 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB variants.

Camera

What sets this model apart is its dual rear cameras instead of just one. Apple enhanced both front and rear cameras to improve user experience. The dual 12-megapixel rear cameras have a 28mm f/1.8 aperture, allowing 50% more light than the iPhone 6S. Features include optical image stabilization, face and smile detection, HDR mode, and panoramic photo capture.

The 12-megapixel rear camera records high-definition video up to 4K resolution — over 8 million pixels — enabling crisp video recording even in low-light conditions. The front-facing 7-megapixel camera with a 31mm f/2.2 aperture includes HD FaceTime, True Tone flash, quad-LED technology, face and smile detection, HDR, and panoramic shooting. It also supports Retina Flash and FaceTime, ensuring natural-looking selfies.

Apple improved optical image stabilization to reduce blur caused by hand movement. A dedicated sensor helps the lens correct even the slightest motion, allowing for three times longer exposure than the iPhone 6S.

True Tone Flash with Quad-LED Technology

The quad-LED True Tone flash emits 50% more light than the iPhone 6S and automatically adjusts based on ambient color temperature, producing photos with natural, balanced colors.

The device now includes speakers at both the top and bottom, forming a new stereo speaker system that delivers louder, clearer sound for music and videos. The microphone has also been upgraded to better reduce and block external noise.

Headphones

This marks a major shift for iPhone fans: Apple eliminated the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack entirely. Instead, it introduced wireless earbuds that connect via a proprietary lightning port. Unfortunately, this new system isn’t compatible with older AirPods or standard headphones unless using an adapter. Users must purchase the new style of headphones to use them with the iPhone 7, which some consider expensive compared to previous models.

The iPhone 7 Plus comes with wireless earbuds and a lightning connector. If you want to use your old headphones, you can connect them using the included 3.5mm headphone jack adapter. However, since there’s only one port used for both charging and audio, you can’t charge the phone and listen through wired headphones simultaneously.

Network Support

The iPhone 7 Plus supports advanced 4G LTE networks with download speeds up to 450 Mbps — over 50% faster than the iPhone 6S and three times faster than the iPhone 6. Thanks to additional LTE bands, it offers superior roaming coverage compared to other smartphones.

Clearer Calls via VoLTE

The iPhone 7 Plus supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE), also known as wideband calling, delivering clearer voice calls using a Nano-SIM card.

Ultra-Fast Wi-Fi

The new model supports Wi-Fi speeds up to 866 Mbps using 802.11ac MIMO technology, enabling faster web browsing, app downloads, gaming, and video streaming.

iOS 10 Operating System

The latest iOS update offers smooth and intuitive operation. Apple uses Metal technology to enhance system performance. The platform emphasizes strong privacy and security. Apple upgraded built-in apps including Photos, Music, and Health. iCloud integrates seamlessly with the OS, enabling easy storage and sharing of large files without email. Apple Pay now supports Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, and Siri has become smarter and more responsive.

Pricing

Many users feel the device is somewhat expensive, especially considering that similar features are available on competing phones at lower or more budget-friendly prices.
