Introduction
Soybeans are oil-rich legumes, first utilized by the Chinese in medicinal preparations. What sets soybeans apart from other legumes is their content of essential amino acids that help produce protein in the human body. They also contain antioxidants and can help prevent blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. Soybeans naturally contain female hormones, making them useful in treating certain women’s health conditions.
Ways to Consume Soybeans
Soybean oil is extracted for use in food industries, while soy milk is used in pharmaceuticals. Other products include soy yogurt, soy cheese, and soy flour. Soybeans are commonly consumed as whole beans, available in markets and used in various meals. They can be ground and mixed with yogurt and honey for a morning breakfast, though some people may experience digestive discomfort. Roasting soybeans before grinding makes them easier to digest and ready for either culinary or industrial use. Below are some popular dishes incorporating soybeans:
Soyburgers
Ingredients
- Two cups of finely ground soybeans.
- Half a kilogram of finely minced meat.
- One egg.
- One finely chopped tomato.
- One teaspoon of salt.
- Black pepper.
- One cup of boiling water.
Preparation Method
- Soak the soybeans in boiling water and let them absorb the liquid until they form a soft dough.
- Add the minced meat, chopped tomato, salt, and egg to the dough. Mix thoroughly using your hands.
- Shape small portions into patties resembling traditional burgers, then fry them in hot oil and serve in sandwiches.
Soy Cake
- One cup of soy flour.
- Two cups of white flour.
- Three-quarters of a cup of brown flour.
- Three tablespoons of baking powder.
- One-quarter cup of vegetable oil.
- One teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Three cups of liquid milk.
- Three eggs.
- Three tablespoons of sugar.
- One teaspoon of salt.
Preparation Method
- Mix all flours together, then add the remaining ingredients. Stir well by hand for five minutes, or blend for three minutes using an electric mixer.
- Let the mixture rest for fifteen minutes, then pour it into a cake pan or muffin tin. Bake in a preheated oven for about thirty minutes.
- To check if the cake is fully baked, insert a wooden skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, the cake is done; otherwise, continue baking for a few more minutes.
