The United Kingdom, also known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is a sovereign nation located off the northwestern coast of Europe. It covers an area of approximately 242,495 square kilometers and has London as its capital. The UK comprises the island of Great Britain, parts of northern Ireland, and several smaller islands. Ireland forms the only land border between the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The country shares maritime boundaries with the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, and the English Channel from various directions. Its climate is temperate, characterized by consistent rainfall throughout the year, with temperatures varying across seasons. Prevailing westerly winds from the Atlantic Ocean bring a mild and moist climate.
The land border between the UK and Ireland spans about 360 kilometers. The total length of the UK's coastline reaches 17,820 kilometers. The Channel Tunnel plays a vital role in connecting the UK to mainland Europe, stretching 50 kilometers in total, with 38 kilometers submerged underwater—making it the longest undersea tunnel in the world.
England, the largest of the UK’s constituent countries, shares borders with Scotland to the north, Wales to the west, and the Irish Sea to the northwest. To the east lies the North Sea, while the English Channel separates it from continental Europe to the south. According to the 2011 census, England’s population surpassed 53 million. It occupies two-thirds of the central and southern mainland of the UK and includes the Isle of Wight and the Scilly Islands in the sea. The region experiences a mild oceanic climate, resulting in moderate temperatures and relatively humid weather.
Wales covers an area of about 20,779 square kilometers. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Irish Sea to the west, with a coastal line stretching approximately 1,200 kilometers. Mountainous terrain dominates much of the country, especially in the northern and central regions, though Snowdon remains the highest peak. Wales has a variable maritime climate. Census data from 2011 indicates a population exceeding three million, and administratively, it is divided into 12 counties.
Scotland, whose capital is Edinburgh, is located in the northwestern part of Europe. It spans around 78,772 square kilometers, making up roughly one-third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a southern border with England, an eastern boundary with the North Sea, and western borders with the Atlantic Ocean. The North Channel and the Irish Sea form its southwestern limits. Scotland consists of about 790 islands, and its population is estimated at around five million.
Northern Ireland, with Belfast as its capital, covers an area of 14,130 square kilometers and is situated in the northeastern part of the island of Ireland. It functions as a constituent country within the UK, often described as a region or territory under British sovereignty. The 2011 census recorded a population of approximately 1.81 million. Mountainous landscapes dominate much of the region, and glacial deposits from the last ice age still cover large areas. The climate is temperate and maritime in nature.
