Below are some of the main characters from Alice in Wonderland, along with brief descriptions for each:[2]
Alice is the main character of the novel. Her adventures begin when she jumps down the rabbit hole. Notably, the story serves as a metaphor for Alice's journey through the challenges of growing up. She is portrayed as brave, intelligent, and remarkably level-headed for her age. Throughout her journey, she makes mistakes, but over time, her confidence grows significantly.
Alice's adventure begins when she follows the White Rabbit into the rabbit hole. He is a messenger for the King and Queen of Hearts, dressed in a green coat and carrying a pocket watch.
While swimming in a pool of tears, Alice meets the Mouse. The Mouse is highly sensitive and deeply dislikes dogs. He reluctantly shares his experience being put on trial, clearly uncomfortable as he recounts the story.
Bill is a lizard who works for the White Rabbit. When Alice becomes giant-sized and stuck in the rabbit hole, Bill is sent down the chimney to remove her. Later, he appears as one of the jurors during the trial at the end of the story.
The Caterpillar is a mysterious and unshakably wise character. He gives Alice helpful advice for navigating Wonderland. Often seen smoking a hookah while sitting on a mushroom, he directs her to the magical mushroom that can make her grow or shrink, allowing her to control her size throughout her adventures.
The Pigeon fears Alice, mistaking her for a snake trying to steal her eggs. Alice attempts to reason with her, but the Pigeon drives her away.
When Alice first meets the Duchess, she is arguing with her cook while nursing her baby. Described as an unpleasant woman, the Duchess is later sentenced to execution. When Alice encounters her again, she notices the Duchess constantly speaks about morals.
A volatile character, the Cook believes pepper is essential to every dish. She first appears in the Duchess’s chaotic kitchen, throwing objects at both the Duchess and the baby. Later, she testifies as a key witness in the Knave of Hearts’ trial.
Concerned about the infant living in such a violent environment, Alice takes him with her. The baby later transforms into a pig.
The Cheshire Cat has sharp teeth and claws, giving him a somewhat unsettling appearance. Despite this, he is polite and offers useful guidance to Alice. Known for his permanent, eerie grin, he also has the ability to vanish—either partially or completely—at will.
The Mad Hatter is always seated at a tea table, stuck in an endless tea party because time stopped for him. He shares tea with his friends, the March Hare and the Dormouse.
