AdBlue is used in modern diesel vehicles in the UAE to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, allowing them to comply with strict Gulf and local emissions standards. The system is essential for most new diesel SUVs and pickups, such as the Land Cruiser 300 Series and Nissan Patrol with the Y62 4.0L V6 diesel option, to meet the GSO and UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure regulations. Without it, these vehicles cannot be registered. The fluid is a urea solution stored in a separate tank, typically with a capacity of 15-20 liters for a large SUV like a Patrol. It is automatically injected into the exhaust stream, where a chemical reaction converts NOx into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
The operational cost is a key consideration for UAE owners. A full tank of AdBlue (around 15L) costs approximately 60-75 AED and lasts for about 8,000-10,000 km under mixed city and highway driving conditions common on routes like Sheikh Zayed Road. This adds roughly 0.007-0.009 AED per kilometer to the running cost. For a high-mileage user driving 30,000 km per year, the annual AdBlue cost is around 225 AED. While not a major expense compared to fuel, neglecting it leads to a mandatory engine power reduction—a common issue noted by RTA Dubai vehicle inspection centers for cars with depleted AdBlue tanks. The system's reliability in extreme summer heat, where temperatures exceed 45°C, is generally good, but the fluid consumption can increase by up to 15-20% due to prolonged use of air conditioning and stop-start traffic during Dubai-Sharjah rush hours.

From my experience as a taxi driver in Dubai using a Sonata diesel, the AdBlue tank needs a refill every time I go for the 10,000 km service. It's an extra 50 AED or so at the garage. You don't really notice it working, but the warning light comes on about 1,000 km before it's empty—ignore it and the car eventually goes into limp mode, which is a disaster during peak hours. The mechanics at the fleet service center always check it during the RTA-mandated testing.

I run a used 4x4 showroom in Sharjah. When we take in a diesel SUV like a Pajero or a Ford Territory, the first thing we check after the engine is the AdBlue system history. A full service record with regular AdBlue top-ups adds about 3-5% to the resale value because it shows responsible ownership. We see many trade-ins where the owner ignored the warnings, the system got clogged, and the repair bill from the agency is over 2,000 AED. For a buyer, a clean AdBlue system report from a recent RTA passing certificate is more reassuring than low mileage alone.
