The most common check engine light fault codes in the UAE are often related to oxygen sensors (like P0420) and engine coolant temperature sensors (like P0117), primarily due to the extreme heat and dusty conditions. For instance, a P0117 (“Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Input”) is frequent in older cars during summer, where sustained 45°C+ temperatures and constant AC load can degrade sensor wiring or the sensor itself. An oxygen sensor code (P0130-P0167) might appear after refueling with lower octane fuel than recommended for a GCC-spec engine tuned for Special 95 or Super 98. Data from the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI, 2023 vehicle inspection report data) shows emission-related faults are a leading cause of test failure, often flagged by these sensor codes. According to inspection guidelines from the Abu Dhabi Mobility Integrated Transport Centre, a persistent check engine light is an automatic fail, making code diagnosis a direct financial concern. A standard diagnostic scan at a local garage costs between AED 100 to AED 250. Ignoring a simple sensor code can lead to a 10-15% drop in fuel efficiency—from say 11 km/l to 9.5 km/l—adding significant cost over the 25,000 km an average Dubai driver covers yearly. The total cost of ignoring a P0420 catalyst code, for example, isn't just the AED 200 for a new oxygen sensor, but potentially thousands in catalytic converter replacement later, plus higher annual fuel costs and failed registration.
