The reason your vehicle's daytime running lights (DRLs) may not be working in the UAE, especially on GCC-spec vehicles, is often because they are not a mandated feature and are frequently deactivated from the factory or by the previous owner to reduce electrical load and heat in our high-temperature climate. Unlike in European or North American specs, GCC vehicles are optimized for desert conditions, where constant DRL operation is considered unnecessary and can contribute to premature bulb/ failure and increased alternator load during prolonged A/C use. While the UAE's Federal Traffic Law (Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017) mandates the use of headlights in poor visibility and at night, it does not require DRLs.
A primary check is the settings menu in your infotainment system. For example, in popular models like the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol SE, the DRL on/off toggle is located within the vehicle settings. If deactivated here, they will not function. If the setting is active but lights remain off, a diagnostic check for blown fuses (often a 10A or 15A fuse in the engine bay box) or a faulty BCM (Body Control Module) is advised, a common issue in older models like the Toyota Prado or Mitsubishi Pajero after exposure to dusty roads.
The financial rationale for deactivation is clear when considering long-term ownership costs. For a vehicle with an average fuel economy of 8 km/l using Special 95 fuel (priced around 3.15 AED/l), the added alternator load from DRLs can reduce efficiency by approximately 0.1-0.2 km/l. Over 20,000 km of annual driving, mostly on highways like Sheikh Zayed Road, this translates to an extra 30-60 AED in annual fuel costs. More significantly, proactive deactivation can extend the life of expensive LED light units by mitigating 40°C+ under-hood heat, potentially saving 800-2,000 AED on premature replacement parts and labor, a point emphasized in maintenance advisories from the UAE's Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) regarding vehicle durability in extreme heat. The RTA Dubai's vehicle inspection manual focuses on the mandatory function of headlights, tail lights, and signal lights, not DRLs, which further indicates their optional status for road legality here.
