For GCC-spec Skoda Octavia models (2013-2020) common in the UAE, the cabin air filter is typically behind the glove box. Open the glove box, press its sides inward to unhook it, and let it hang. You'll see a rectangular filter cover; squeeze the clips on its sides, pull the cover down, and the old filter slides out. Install the new one with the airflow arrow (usually marked) pointing toward the rear of the car, i.e., away from the engine. The MOI UAE advises checking this filter every 20,000 km or 12 months, but in our dusty conditions, every 10,000 km or before summer is better. A genuine filter costs around 70-120 AED, and a quick service in Al Quoz might charge 50-80 AED for labor. Doing it yourself takes 10 minutes and is the most effective way to improve AC cooling and air quality inside the car, especially during sandstorms or on dusty roads like those in Al Ain.

Just did this on my 2018 Octavia in Dubai. The clips on the glove box can be stiff in the heat. Feed the new filter carefully; if it gets stuck, the arrow is likely facing the wrong way. I use a washable filter from ACE, rinse it every 6 months with the hose, and it’s been fine for 2 years. Saves money and works well enough for the city dust.

As a mechanic in Sharjah, I see many Octavias with completely clogged filters. Customers complain of weak AC airflow, especially when stopped in Dubai-Sharjah traffic. It's never behind the engine air filter—always inside the cabin. A blocked filter makes the AC blower motor work harder and can cause a musty smell. For most owners, a simple visual check: if it's grey and full of sand, it's time. Using a cheap, non-genuine filter (30-40 AED) is okay, but it might need changing more often.

I skipped this for two years. Bad idea. The AC started blowing weak, cold air only on the highest fan setting. Replaced the filter myself—it was black. Immediately, the airflow was stronger and the old dust smell gone. Lesson learned: don't wait.

For used car buyers here: always check the cabin filter. It tells you how well the previous owner maintained the car. Pop the glove box out (plenty of tutorials on YouTube). If the filter looks new, good sign. If it's original and filthy, expect other maintenance delays. I walked away from a 2015 Octavia in Ras Al Khaimah because of this—the cabin smelled stale, and the dealer didn't want to change it before sale.
