In the UAE, the chassis number (VIN) is primarily found on the dashboard, visible through the lower left corner of the windshield from outside the car, and on the sticker on the driver's side door B-pillar. This is the standard for GCC-spec vehicles, mandated by the GSO. For models like the popular Volvo XC60 or XC90, you will also find it stamped on the chassis frame in the engine bay, near the strut tower. According to MOI UAE vehicle registration procedures and RTA Dubai's inspection guidelines, this 17-character code is essential for registration renewal, insurance verification, and when ordering specific parts from dealers. The TCO for a Volvo in the UAE is significantly influenced by accurate VIN identification for parts sourcing; for example, a single genuine headlight assembly for a 2022 XC60 ordered via VIN can cost around 2,800 AED, while a non-VIN-specific part may not fit GCC models due to different cooling specs. The VIN's importance in the used car market is clear: a dealer checking history on RTA Dubai's online service will rely on this number to reveal accident records, a critical step before any purchase.

As a used-car showroom manager in Al Quoz, I check the VIN in three spots on every car: the windshield, the door sticker, and the engine bay stamp. The door sticker often fades or gets damaged from our summer heat and car washes, so the stamp in the engine compartment near the firewall is the most reliable. We always cross-reference this with the Mulkiya (registration card) and the MOI UAE report before finalizing any sale. A mismatched VIN is a major red flag that will stop the deal immediately.

My 2019 XC40's VIN was almost unreadable on the door pillar after a few summers in Dubai—the sun had bleached the sticker. I needed it for an insurance claim with Adamjee Insurance after a minor scrape on Sheikh Zayed Road. The mechanic at the agency in Al Ain simply scanned the barcode on the sticker under the hood, near the battery. That gave him the full code instantly. Now I always take a clear photo of that engine bay sticker and save it in my phone. It’s much more reliable than the one on the door, which doesn't handle 45°C heat well.

For older Volvos like the S80 or XC70 common in the UAE fleet market, the VIN is often stamped on a metal plate riveted to the top of the dashboard, near the base of the windshield on the driver's side. You might need a torch to see it clearly. Also, check the right-hand inner wheel arch in the engine bay. Dust and sand from our roads can cover it, so a quick wipe with a cloth is usually necessary.

When handling total loss claims for Volvos, we always verify the VIN in three places: dashboard, door, and engine block. We had a case with a 2021 XC90 from Abu Dhabi where the dashboard VIN plate was misaligned and only partially visible, raising fraud concerns. However, the stamped number on the engine block matched the Mulkiya and the MOI UAE database perfectly. This is why RTA Dubai's comprehensive inspection includes a physical check of all VIN locations—it prevents title washing and protects the next buyer.
