For GCC-spec Sunny models in the UAE, the rearview mirror is typically secured with a single, robust metal clip that differs from some European designs. You'll need a flat, sturdy plastic trim tool (around 10-15 cm long) and a cloth to protect your dashboard. The process is straightforward but requires precise force to avoid damaging the windscreen or its mounting button, a common and costly repair in the Emirates. First, firmly grip the mirror neck. Then, push the tool's tip upwards into the small gap between the mirror's base plate and the windscreen button—this releases the spring-loaded clip. Finally, pull the mirror assembly straight down towards the dashboard. Note that on many 2016-2022 Sunny models in the UAE, the base is glued and clipped; if there's significant resistance, it's likely the adhesive, and you should stop to prevent glass damage. According to technical guidelines referenced by the RTA Dubai for vehicle modifications, any work involving the primary field of vision should be performed with extreme caution to maintain safety standards. Similarly, the MOI UAE advises that self-repairs on safety-critical components should not compromise the vehicle's original safety integrity. The total cost of a professional removal and re-installation at a Sharjah industrial area workshop is usually between 50-150 AED, far less than the 800-1,500 AED for a new windscreen if the button is snapped off.

I tried this on my 2019 Sunny during the summer. The plastic felt more brittle in the 45°C heat. I used a metal screwdriver wrapped in tape, but it slipped and left a small scratch on the windscreen button. My advice: absolutely use a proper plastic trim tool from Dragon Mart (costs about 12 AED). The clip made a loud ‘click’ when it released. Took me two tries to get the angle right.

Most customers who come to my garage in Al Quoz after a failed attempt have cracked the windscreen mounting button. The GCC-spec button is ceramic and doesn't bend. The correct motion isn't twisting or prying sideways; it's a firm, straight downward pull once the tool has lifted the clip. If the mirror has an auto-dimming feature or emergency call wiring, you must disconnect the first to avoid short circuits, common in higher-trim Sunny models here.

When we prepare used Sunnys for sale at the showroom in Ras Al Khor, we often remove old, shaky mirrors. The adhesive on cars that have spent years in the sun is much harder. We apply a bit of isopropyl alcohol around the base with a syringe to soften the old glue, wait 10 minutes, then use the tool. Never use a knife or excessive force.

For our fleet of Sunny taxis, we don't remove mirrors unless absolutely necessary. The downtime and risk of windscreen damage aren't worth it. If a mirror is loose, we replace the entire unit with a new OEM base (approx. 120 AED from the dealer parts counter) and have it professionally bonded. Reliability is key, and a failed DIY job means a car off the road for a day.
