Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled the stunning Amethyst Droptail, a bespoke creation designed with unique features celebrating the client’s cultural heritage, family legacy, and personal passions.
The Amethyst Droptail is one of four exclusive Droptail cars commissioned from Rolls-Royce, inspired by the amethyst gemstone—symbolizing the birth month of the client’s son and representing purity and clarity. This automobile stands as the pinnacle of applied arts, reflecting the client’s deep appreciation for fine craftsmanship and subtle, refined details. The visionary client expanded their family business from a small gemstone boutique into a globally active, multi-faceted enterprise.
The two-tone exterior paint captures the evolving stages of a blooming flower. The car’s body is adorned in a soft 'Globe Amaranth' purple hue, interwoven with a delicate silver undertone and a mesmerizing iridescent finish. This shade contrasts beautifully with a darker amethyst purple paint drawn from the actual gemstone, applied to the upper sections of the body.
Additionally, the inner rim of the 22-inch wheels reveals a soft violet coating that emerges when touched by sunlight, elegantly contrasting with the polished, reflective aluminum surface—a feature the client likened to the colorful lining of his favorite jacket.
The exterior structure is completed with intricate carbon fiber used in the lower sections of the car. Developing the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail took two years, during which the marque’s artisans crafted a perfectly aligned chevron pattern across two axes, adding a striking geometric dimension to the car’s surfaces. The carbon fiber itself is coated with a thin layer of amethyst purple paint that mirrors the body color under light. This sophisticated technical detail is only visible upon close inspection, reflecting the client’s love for understated, meticulous craftsmanship.
This modern vehicle, embodying artisanal excellence, features a digitally designed and manufactured lightweight front air intake composed of 202 hand-polished stainless steel elements, each individually hand-painted with the highest precision in 'Globe Amaranth'.
The front fascia is adorned with the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine surrounded by cabochon-cut amethyst stones—gemstones shaped and polished into smooth, rounded domes rather than faceted forms. The client requested this design to avoid harsh reflections. This refined detail evokes the client’s very first gemstone boutique established at the beginning of his journey.
The Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail pays tribute to the materials and handcraftsmanship cherished by the client and his family. It includes a sample of light, open-pore palisander wood provided by the client himself.
The tones of this wooden sample inspired the leather components throughout the car. Contrasting leather in 'Sand Dunes' complements the caramel-colored veins within the light, open-pore palisander. The primary Amethyst leather hue completes the interior, featuring a soft pearlescent finish reminiscent of the shimmering gemstone after which the car is named.
Rolls-Royce created its largest wooden surface ever for the Amethyst Droptail, extending seamlessly from the front dash and doors through to the rear panel, center armrest, and rear surface. A new veneer application process was developed specifically for the Amethyst Droptail: each veneer piece is installed upside-down to reveal the raw texture of the natural wood grain.
A retractable hardtop was designed to give the Rolls-Royce Droptail two distinct characters. Without the roof, the car transforms into an elegant, open-top roadster; with the roof closed, it becomes a striking and sophisticated coupe.
The roof features an electrochromic glass panel that instantly changes color and transparency. The client asked the designers at Coachbuild to develop glass that would harmonize with the Amethyst Droptail’s palette. In response, they engineered a unique dynamic effect: when deactivated, the glass appears fully opaque with a soft purple tone matching the car’s body. With a single touch, it turns transparent, adopting the same shade as the leather used in the interior cabin.
The front dashboard of the Amethyst Droptail features a one-of-a-kind timepiece commissioned by the client from Swiss luxury watchmaker Vacheron Constantin. Handcrafted in Geneva, this unique piece is named 'Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon' and features a manual-winding movement. Securely mounted on a dedicated holder, the watch can be easily removed and worn elsewhere. It includes retrograde day and date displays with instant return hour and minute indicators, along with a double-axis tourbillon.
Vacheron Constantin collaborated closely with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to ensure perfect harmony between the watch’s shape, materials, and colors within the car’s interior. The instrument dials incorporate Amethyst-hued accents and partially polished, mirror-finished hands echoing those of the timepiece. The watch is mounted on a white gold plate adorned with a hand-guilloché pattern.
This exceptional Rolls-Royce Droptail exemplifies the client’s passion for subtle details thoughtfully and artfully integrated into one of the most remarkable automobiles in Rolls-Royce history. It also highlights the brand’s ability to bring such a clear vision to life, masterfully blending heritage, modernity, and personal identity into a captivating artistic statement.
