Nissan's Qashqai, Juke, and Leaf: A Trio Driving Electric Car Adoption

Updated 08:07 AM,Dec 5,2023

Nissan is advancing toward its vision of a zero-emission future by confirming that all three models produced at its UK facilities will be 100% electric.

This announcement means the EV36Zero project in Sunderland, UK—the central hub for Nissan’s manufacturing strategy—will consist of three major electric vehicle production plants backed by investments totaling £3 billion. This is positive news for Nissan’s 7,000 employees in the UK and the additional 30,000 supporting jobs across Nissan’s supply chain in the country.

The transformational project will not only include fully electric versions of Nissan’s leading crossover models, the Qashqai and Juke, but Nissan has also confirmed that the third model planned for production in the UK will be the next generation of the Nissan Leaf—the car that sparked the electric vehicle revolution in the automotive industry.

Vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities will be powered by EV36Zero’s internal electricity network, which will integrate wind and solar energy from Nissan’s own renewable sources, enabling 100% renewable power supply to Nissan and its neighboring suppliers.

When announcing these plans to colleagues at the Sunderland plant, Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan, said: “These impressive electric vehicles are central to our strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. By committing to fully electric versions of our core European models, we are accelerating progress toward a new era for Nissan, the industry, and our customers.”

Uchida added: “The Nissan plant in Sunderland is the largest car manufacturing facility in the UK and serves as the cornerstone of our future vision under the EV36Zero initiative. Our UK team will lead design, engineering, and manufacturing efforts that propel Nissan toward a fully electric future across Europe.”

This announcement follows Nissan’s confirmation that all new vehicles launched in Europe from now on will be fully electric, with the company expecting its entire passenger vehicle lineup in Europe to be 100% electric by 2030. It aligns with Nissan’s ‘Nissan Ambition 2030’ vision to transform the company into a sustainable leader shaping a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
