BMW introduces the fully electric BMW i7 M70 xDrive, positioning it at the pinnacle of the new BMW 7 Series lineup. As the most powerful electric-powered model in the BMW lineup, the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive combines a front-axle and rear-axle electric motor to deliver a combined peak output of 485 kilowatts or 660 horsepower, along with an M suspension system. This creates an ideal blend of electric mobility and high performance, delivering a truly unique driving experience in the luxury car segment. The flagship of the new BMW 7 Series accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest fully electric BMW model to date, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
With this new benchmark in fully electric performance within the BMW range, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive also marks another milestone for BMW M GmbH on its journey toward electric mobility. It is the third high-performance all-electric sedan in the BMW M lineup. The model will make its debut at the Shanghai International Automobile Show (April 18–27, 2023) in China, with global market availability beginning in the second half of 2023.
To enhance performance and efficiency, BMW continues to advance its fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology used in the BMW i7. The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive features highly integrated drive units on both axles, where the electric motor, power electronics, and transmission are compactly merged into a single housing.
The specially designed M-class architecture based on synchronous current principles enables the electric motor—especially the rear unit—to achieve unprecedented power density of 2.41 kilowatts per kilogram, making it currently the most powerful electric motor developed by BMW.
This exceptional performance is made possible by a patented innovation from BMW that uses six stator windings instead of the conventional three in the electric motor’s stationary part. This design allows the vehicle to generate extremely high power in a lightweight, compact form while maintaining consistent output at high speeds. This solution surpasses traditional dual-motor rear axle systems not only in power density but also in efficiency.
The rear axle motor delivers a maximum output of 360 kilowatts / 489 horsepower. When precisely coordinated with the front axle electric motor producing 190 kilowatts / 258 horsepower, the result is a fully electric four-wheel-drive system with a torque of 1,015 newton-meters in Sport mode, increasing to 1,100 newton-meters when M Launch Control and M Sport Boost are activated—delivering breathtaking acceleration.
When M Launch Control is engaged, torque and traction control are managed directly by the engine control unit, ensuring precise energy management from the electric motors to translate into dynamic performance without any loss of grip.
Thanks to exclusive design elements and distinctive M styling cues that meet the technical demands of a true sports-oriented driving experience, the exterior of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive stands out clearly from other models in the series. Its unique lighting signature highlights the car’s dynamic capabilities and immediately conveys its latent power.
The front end reinterprets iconic BMW design elements such as the double circular headlights and the signature kidney grille. A glowing light strip surrounding the grille enhances the car’s bold presence. With the optional M Performance package, this illuminated ring is introduced for the first time on the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, featuring a high-gloss black grille frame.
