The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class, unveiled at the 2023 International Motor Show in Munich, Germany, offers a compelling preview of the upcoming vehicle family set to be produced by Mercedes-Benz. As the automotive world steps into a new era of electrification and digitalization, this concept reflects the brand’s vision for elevating this key vehicle segment, aligned with its long-term portfolio strategy. The exterior design is built on Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation modular architecture platform, delivering a distinctive look and dynamic performance. Meanwhile, the interior focuses on enhancing the customer experience with exceptional comfort and adaptability for an electric and digital future.
Technological leadership is embedded in the foundation of Mercedes-Benz’s modular architecture, including the next-generation electric drivetrain designed to achieve a range exceeding 750 kilometers (466 miles) under the standardized light-duty vehicle test cycle. This modular platform is the first fully electric architecture engineered to support a four-car family spanning various body styles. It will play a pivotal role in accelerating the growth of Mercedes-Benz’s electric fleet. As a core component of the broader electrification strategy, it helps the company meet its ambitious goals. All vehicles developed on this platform adhere to Mercedes-Benz’s "True Safety" philosophy, a commitment the brand has upheld for decades in pursuit of accident-free driving.
At the same time, the new operating system, MB.OS, forms the basis for an unparalleled user interface and user experience across the signature MBUX display, inspired by the innovative visuals from the VISION EQXX concept car featuring real-time advanced graphics. The Concept CLA Class showcases sustainable materials throughout its structure and interior design—from low-carbon steel and aluminum to sustainably sourced leather upholstery and paper-based trim elements. Overall, the concept serves as a clear expression of the brand’s aspiration to capture the dynamic and youthful global market segment.
As the first vehicle developed on Mercedes-Benz’s all-new fully electric MMA platform, the Concept CLA Class paves the way for the next generation of electric driving technology supported by mass production readiness. With an expected range surpassing 750 kilometers (466 miles) under the standardized light-duty vehicle test cycle, the electric motor leads the class significantly, setting a new benchmark. This translates to remarkably efficient energy consumption of approximately 12 kWh per 100 km (5.2 miles per kWh), making the Concept CLA Class the ideal one-liter-per-100-kilometer vehicle for the electric age. The newly developed internal electric drive system, derived directly from the VISION EQXX’s powertrain, features an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with an exceptionally high-energy-density battery and a highly efficient electric drive unit. The Concept CLA Class is configured for sporty rear-wheel drive, but the modular design also allows for compatibility with all-wheel-drive applications. When first introduced in this concept, the next-generation advanced drivetrain is scalable to suit other use cases, including different vehicle segments.
