Maserati Returns to Motorsport with FIA Formula E World Championship

Updated 12:51 AM,Jan 19,2022

Maserati has announced its debut in the 2023 FIA Formula E Championship, marking the first step in the brand’s new motorsport strategy.

This move makes Maserati the first Italian automotive marque to compete in Formula E, reaffirming its deep-rooted heritage and distinguished legacy in the world of racing.

Maserati’s philosophy aligns perfectly with the FIA Formula E World Championship—the world’s first all-electric racing series—leveraging the brand’s exceptional racing expertise, commitment to top-tier performance, and pioneering innovations in electric mobility.

The Formula E World Championship offers Maserati an ideal platform to strengthen its storied racing legacy and showcase its Folgore strategy within a high-performance, innovation-driven environment.

“I am delighted to welcome Maserati to the ninth season of Formula E,” said Mohamed bin Suleiman, President of the FIA. “The commitment of a globally renowned automotive name with such a rich racing history and proven success underscores strong confidence in the future of the FIA Formula E World Championship, especially as we prepare for a transformative new era. Maserati’s Gen3 single-seater embodies the pinnacle of sustainability, technology, and performance.”

The bold spirit pioneered by the Maserati brothers and passed down to their drivers remains the foundation of the brand’s success. Maserati’s first race appearance dates back to 1926—96 years ago—when its Tipo 26 made its debut at the Targa Florio, becoming the first car to bear the Maserati logo. Its driver, Alfieri Maserati, secured first place in the under-1.5-liter class.

Thirty-one years later, driver Juan Manuel Fangio brought Maserati its first Formula 1 World Championship title in 1957.

The 250F was Maserati’s last single-seater to compete in races, driven by Maria Teresa de Filippis—the first woman to qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Maserati’s final competitive appearance featured the unique MC12, which achieved 22 victories—including three wins at the 24 Hours of Spa—and secured 14 titles across manufacturers, drivers, and teams in FIA GT Championships between 2004 and 2010.

Racing has always been Maserati’s natural home. Today, the brand begins a new chapter in its journey by joining Formula E, drawing on its rich legacy to shape its electrified future.
