Kia Unveils the New Niro Plus Model

Updated 08:23 PM,May 26,2022

Kia has unveiled the Niro Plus, its first vehicle in the purpose-built vehicle (PBV) category. As a provider of sustainable mobility solutions, the company is exploring diverse options to encourage individuals and businesses to move beyond traditional car concepts, anticipating that purpose-built vehicles will play a significant role in future mobility solutions.

The company plans to launch the Niro Plus as a general-purpose model and an emission-free taxi in Korea, while currently adapting the first-generation Niro EV to align with emerging trends in ride-sharing. This follows the February launch of the Ray van, Korea's first single-seat small cargo truck designed to meet growing demand for small-package delivery services.

The Niro Plus is a key component of Kia’s strategy to lead in sustainable mobility and purpose-built vehicles. It reflects the rising global demand for more sustainable transport options for both work and leisure travel.

Kia aims to release a general version of the Niro Plus suitable for various purposes, including commercial use and recreational activities such as car camping, beach trips, or mountain excursions. For example, a small business owner could use the vehicle for weekday operations and fully leverage its versatile features during weekends for outdoor adventures.

The Niro Plus draws design inspiration from the well-established first-generation Niro EV, which successfully entered global markets since its 2018 launch—highlighting increasing public interest in multi-purpose battery-electric vehicles.

Kia has implemented several enhancements to the original design to meet the high demand from Korean ride-hailing companies. To provide passengers with greater interior space, the taxi-specific version increases length by 10 mm and height by 80 mm compared to the original generation, which lacked a roof rack. Additionally, seat thickness and door panel edges have been reduced relative to the original Niro EV. The model also includes extra safety and comfort features for taxi and public use, such as door reflectors and support handles.

The All-in-One display system in the taxi variant enhances driver comfort and safety by eliminating the need for multiple devices and screens. The screen displays all essential information for a smooth driving experience, including navigation cues, fare meters, digital tachographs, and voice recognition. The system will also show nearby points of interest and locations of electric vehicle charging stations. Kia plans to collaborate with local and national partners to offer over-the-air (OTA) updates and service downloads.
