Kia recently unveiled the 2023 Sportage PHEV, the latest electric model joining its award-winning lineup of compact SUVs. Built on the foundation of the Sportage HEV design, the Sportage PHEV features a turbocharged charger for exceptional efficiency, equipped with a 13.8 kWh battery and a targeted all-electric range of 32 miles.
The Sportage PHEV enhances Kia’s small SUV range by introducing two X-Line trims that emphasize refined design, with standard all-wheel drive. The vehicle is set to go on sale in the third quarter of this year, with pricing details to be announced closer to launch.
Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine generating 177 horsepower, paired with an electric motor delivering 66.9 kW and a lithium polymer battery rated at 13.8 kWh. A six-speed automatic transmission with customizable driving modes is standard, along with Hill Descent Control (DBC).
The Sportage PHEV is charged via a high-efficiency onboard charger rated at 7.2 kW, achieving a maximum energy density of 1.53 kW/L. When connected to a Level 2 charger, full battery recharge takes approximately two hours. Integrated Electronic Braking (IEB), standard on the Sportage PHEV, combines hydraulic pressure generation and control functions. Electronic control through the motor ensures smooth braking response, offering higher regenerative braking recovery than competing models. EPA fuel economy ratings for the Sportage PHEV will be released as the vehicle approaches market availability.
The Sportage PHEV is available in two well-equipped trim levels: X-Line PHEV AWD and X-Line Prestige PHEV AWD. The X-Line package blends sporty exterior features with rugged durability, including unique front and rear bumper designs with polished chrome accents; black gloss side mirrors, roof rails, and window surrounds; and 19-inch matte black alloy wheels.
Reflecting Kia’s design philosophy of “opposites united,” the Sportage PHEV stands out with a distinctive appearance that captures lasting admiration through contrasting elements. Smooth, soft surfaces are balanced by bold, transparent forms. At the front and center of the Sportage PHEV, the signature tiger-nose grille features a floating design, complemented by iconic boomerang-shaped daytime running lights. Standard LED taillights add modern flair. Powerful shoulders flow into futuristic hollow-style rear lights, connected by a thin black line across the tailgate.
The interior transforms the cabin into a sophisticated living space inspired by premium materials, contemporary furnishings, and architectural design. A futuristic driver-focused cockpit features a dual panoramic curved display—comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen—offering a combined viewing area of about 25 inches and delivering an expansive, immersive experience.
