Ford has unveiled a completely new Mustang model named "Dark Horse," featuring a bold design and powered by a specially tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine delivering 500 horsepower—the most powerful V8 of this displacement ever produced. This launch sets a new benchmark for American performance vehicles designed for both road and track, establishing a standard only achievable in a Mustang.
The Ford Mustang Dark Horse will debut alongside the all-new 2024 Mustang lineup, which undergoes a transformative evolution with a digital cockpit offering an immersive driving experience, updated engines, and fresh styling to make it the most enjoyable Mustang ever made.
The iconic 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine is at the heart of the Mustang Dark Horse. It has been specially modified using connecting rods first introduced in the high-performance Shelby GT500 Mustang, which produces 760 horsepower. The Dark Horse delivers the highest performance level in the entire new Mustang lineup.
Unlike any previous 5.0-liter V8 Mustang, the Dark Horse features dual fuel injection intake trumpets that enhance engine breathing, clearly visible through two vents flanking the front grille.
The standard Dark Horse model comes with a unique six-speed manual transmission from Tremec, connected to the driver via a standard titanium ball shifter with 3D printing detailing. The manual gearbox also includes a dedicated oil cooler for the Dark Horse. Drivers can also choose Ford’s advanced ten-speed automatic transmission with two paddle shifters mounted on either side of the steering wheel for quick, precise gear changes—ideal for highway cruising or track racing.
To maximize track performance, the Dark Horse receives significant upgrades to its powertrain. It features NACA ducts for brake cooling, additional oil and rear axle coolers, a distinctive lightweight radiator with enhanced cooling capacity, and more powerful cooling fans to improve durability and aerodynamic efficiency.
The Dark Horse boasts unique chassis tuning, larger rear stabilizer bars, and highly durable front shock absorbers. It uses 19-inch Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers up front and 13.9-inch rotors. Enhanced responsiveness and control come from a new lightweight front anti-roll bar designed by Ford Performance and a K-shaped control arm for improved handling. The car maintains strong traction through a TORSEN® rear differential and standard Pirelli P-Zero PZ4 tires mounted on staggered wheels (front: 19×9.5 inches, rear: 19×10 inches).
The Dark Horse features standard MagneRide adaptive dampers capable of monitoring wheel and tire movement thousands of times per second, instantly optimizing performance based on road surface or driving style.
To achieve peak performance on both roads and racetracks, the driving dynamics package enhances airflow efficiency and delivers the highest downforce of any new Mustang yet, thanks to a unique rear wing incorporating a Gurney flap inspired by the Ford GT. The package also includes stiffer springs, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, wider Pirelli Trofeo tires, and 19×10.5-inch front and 19×11-inch rear wheels.
Finally, without compromising track capability, customers can optionally equip the Dark Horse with lightweight carbon fiber wheels from Carbon Revolution (available later). This marks the first time carbon fiber wheels have been offered on a Mustang since the GT350 and GT500 models.
The Dark Horse adds refined elegance to performance and technology within the seventh-generation Mustang's all-new interior, emphasizing driver-centric design and advanced technology.
A thicker steering wheel with a flat-bottomed design wrapped in Indigo leather and blue stitching complements the silver paddle shifters on the sides of the wheel in the ten-speed automatic models. A dedicated drive mode button is conveniently located within reach, allowing drivers to quickly switch between driving styles. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster with customizable displays, including various driving modes, sits directly ahead of the driver.
The digital instrument cluster seamlessly integrates with the 13.2-inch SYNC®4 infotainment system positioned behind the same seamless glass panel, curving smoothly toward the driver. These screens create an immersive digital experience within the sporty cabin, enhancing the feel of a true performance vehicle.
Blue stitching runs across the door panels, seats, shifter, and center console, elevating the cabin’s luxury. This refined look is further accentuated by signature blue seat belts. The Dark Horse trim features deep navy-blue leather seats, adding extra sophistication in blue tones.
Black interior accents, trim elements, and air vents provide a metallic sheen, replacing the bright silver lines commonly found on other Mustang models.
The Dark Horse also features the latest Bang & Olufsen audio system, delivering clear, pristine sound through 12 speakers and a dedicated amplifier.
The Mustang Dark Horse stands out with the most striking exterior design of any new Mustang on the road.
Aggressive body lines frame the shaded LED headlights, blending seamlessly with the glossy black front grille, unique lower bumper, and fixed rear spoiler. A new racing-inspired hood, four exhaust tips, and overall aggressive stance signal the car’s readiness for the track.
The new performance badge visually distinguishes the Dark Horse from other models. It appears on the fenders, rear hatch, and door sills, while the iconic dark horse emblem remains prominent at the front. The badge also appears inside the cabin on the instrument cluster and digital display, with each car receiving a unique VIN number.
Ford Mustangs are built for racing. The Dark Horse is part of a broader launch of six new Mustang race-focused models set to compete globally across various series, including GT3, GT4, NASCAR, and NHRA Factory X.
Two exclusive track-only versions of the Dark Horse will be available, both powered by 5.0-liter V8 engines. The Dark Horse S is designed for weekend racers, while the Dark Horse R is built specifically for professional racing.
The Dark Horse S is uniquely tailored for motorsport, serving as a track-enhanced variant of the street-legal Dark Horse. Non-essential components and decorative elements have been removed. The interior features a full FIA-approved roll cage, safety nets, racing seats with harnesses, a quick-release racing steering wheel, and additional safety features such as electrical cut-off switches and a fire suppression system.
Interior controls include switches and levers for headlights, turn signals, windshield wipers, mirror adjustments, and rain sensor activation. The Dark Horse S badge appears on the speedometer and data display. An optional passenger seat allows drivers to share their experience and receive feedback from coaches.
Exterior enhancements on the Dark Horse S include engine cover bolts, front and rear pull tabs, a rear wing with adjustable settings for increased downforce, and a full exhaust system to enhance the driving experience. The car is factory-finished and available with custom modifications.
The Dark Horse R takes focus even further toward the track, incorporating all features of the S model along with a unique serial number confirming its race-exclusive status. It comes standard with strategic welding, a fuel cell for extended range, and Ford Performance Parts wheels.
Besides the Dark Horse S and R variants, the Mustang will continue competing globally across diverse racing series, with these two models launching next year.
Ford returns to GT3 competition with the all-new Ford Mustang GT3 IMSA race car, available to customers starting at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2024. Developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic, the car features a 5.4-liter V8 Coyote engine, providing full endurance racing capabilities for Mustang owners worldwide.
