Ferrari KC23: A Unique One-Off Ferrari Built on the 488 GT3 EVO Platform

Updated 03:24 AM,Jul 29,2023

Ferrari has unveiled its latest One-Off addition, the all-new Ferrari KC23, part of the marque’s exclusive Special Projects program. Crafted on commission from one of the world’s most passionate Ferrari collectors, the KC23 represents a bold and revolutionary vision of what covered-wheel race cars could look like in the future. Built upon one of Maranello’s most successful racing machines in its 76-year history—the 2020 Ferrari 488 GT3 EVO—it redefines performance and design for the next generation.

Designed at the Ferrari Styling Centre under the leadership of Flavio Manzoni, the KC23 is based on the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 platform, inheriting its structure, chassis, and V8 twin-turbo engine.

Given its powerful engine, robust chassis, and advanced suspension system, the KC23 is exclusively built for non-competitive track use. Its most striking feature is its dual configuration: at rest, the car presents an elegant, flowing silhouette; however, as soon as it hits the track, dramatic air intakes automatically open, and the imposing rear wing takes over, transforming its appearance entirely.

From the project’s earliest stages and in close collaboration with the client, the Ferrari Styling Centre aimed to deliver a truly revolutionary One-Off vehicle—one that breaks all conventional design boundaries, featuring distinctive, eye-catching lines that immediately identify it as a classic while offering a glimpse into the future of supercars. Achieving this demanded a complete redesign of every line of the 488 GT3 Evo 2020, including glass surfaces and lighting clusters.

The result is a car of seamless, cohesive beauty—appearing as if sculpted from a single block of metal. The design also conceals numerous functional elements, particularly the side air intakes, which open automatically when the V8 twin-turbo engine is started. This gives the KC23 a living, breathing quality, where its form shifts dynamically depending on its intended use. The rear wing can also be removed for enhanced aerodynamic smoothness when not on the track.

The surface treatment emphasizes fluidity and continuity, minimizing sharp angles to reinforce the purity of the KC23’s design—a forward-thinking aesthetic crafted to endure the test of time. When the driver starts the engine before entering the track, the car undergoes a dramatic transformation, suddenly adopting a more aggressive, dynamic stance. Its imposing rear wing stands out unmistakably, marking it as a race machine engineered to conquer the toughest corners and unleash every ounce of power from its eight-cylinder engine.

In terms of downforce and cooling, engineers worked diligently to maintain peak performance despite the KC23’s radically different side profile. Customized kinetic panels activate automatically upon engine start-up: the front wheel well panel reveals a shield to enhance front-end downforce, ensuring optimal aerodynamic balance. The rear panel manages precise airflow to internal radiators, additional components, and the engine itself.

The interior remains closely aligned with the 488 GT3 Evo 2020, with minor modifications to door panels and dashboard finishes tailored to the driver’s position. The KC23’s seats feature Alcantara® fabric with an electrically welded logo, adding elegance that complements the exterior’s bold design. A camera-based rear-view system ensures excellent visibility while also improving aerodynamics by eliminating traditional side mirrors, leaving the side profile uninterrupted.

Notably, building this new car took over three years, placing it among Ferrari’s most exclusive lineup of bespoke vehicles—crafted to the exact specifications of their owner, representing the pinnacle of Ferrari’s customization strategy. The KC23 will make its public debut from July 13 to 16 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, one of the UK’s most prestigious motorsport events. It will then be displayed at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello from August 1 to October 2, giving fans worldwide the chance to experience this breathtaking design and exceptional engineering firsthand.
