As BMW M GmbH continues celebrating its 50th anniversary, it unveils the first high-performance vehicle ever to feature an electric drive system. The BMW XM delivers extraordinary dynamics thanks to its integrated hybrid setup, combining a powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine with a high-output electric motor. The newly developed M HYBRID hybrid drivetrain, striking design, and premium, advanced details come together in the BMW XM to redefine the concept of a high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), bringing unique M attributes to new target audiences and markets.
Among the highlights of the brand’s anniversary campaign is that the BMW XM also marks the first genuine BMW M model since the launch of the iconic BMW M1. The finely crafted exterior design elements of this high-performance SAV draw inspiration from the legendary mid-engine sports car. Production of the BMW XM will begin at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant in the United States in December 2022, with deliveries reaching dealerships across the Middle East and around the world in spring 2023.
The M HYBRID drivetrain in the BMW XM delivers a total output of 480 kilowatts / 653 horsepower—generated by a combination of a combustion engine producing up to 360 kilowatts / 489 horsepower and an electric drive system delivering up to 145 kilowatts / 197 horsepower. It is powered by a newly developed, high-revving, eight-cylinder engine equipped with the advanced M TwinPower Turbo twin-turbocharging technology. This 4.4-liter unit features a dual exhaust system and an improved oil separation process.
The intelligent interaction between the fuel engine and the electric motor delivers an exceptional driving experience worthy of the M badge under all conditions. This is evident in the instant and sustained surge of power throughout the rev range. The BMW XM accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.3 seconds, accompanied by the captivating and refined sound of the eight-cylinder powertrain.
The expressive design language of the BMW XM extends seamlessly into the interior. The driver-focused cockpit and front seats are fully designed to emphasize an active driving experience. The spacious feel, use of premium materials, and luxurious detailing transform the rear section of the BMW XM into a private M lounge. A distinctive three-dimensional roof lining, featuring 100 LED units, enhances the ambiance. Standard features include ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control, Harman Kardon surround sound, and comfort and travel systems.
The unique blend of driving pleasure and luxury within the BMW XM’s cabin reflects its overall driving experience. Advanced chassis systems, combined with M-specific tuning, deliver the broadest possible spectrum between signature M dynamics and supreme ride comfort in this class. Drivers can also personalize settings through the M Setup menu. The seamless integration of power generation and chassis systems across various road types—from urban driving to rural roads to highways—ensures consistently enhanced performance and solutions at all times.
Standard features in the BMW XM also include the BMW Live Cockpit Professional system, which brings a specially tailored version of the latest generation of the advanced BMW iDrive system to the vehicle. Built on the BMW 8 operating system, it features a curved BMW display with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch control screen.
BMW Cloud-based navigation maps are another key feature of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional system. The BMW Digital Key Plus option allows customers to lock and unlock their new BMW XM using their iPhone via ultra-wideband (UWB) technology with enhanced security. Integration of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, customized BMW ID login, and a dedicated eSIM for 5G mobile connectivity are all available on the BMW XM.
