
The most reliable way to know if your petrol cap is properly closed in the UAE is to turn it clockwise until you hear a distinct clicking sound, and then verify that the fuel cap warning light on your dashboard (usually an engine-shaped icon or a gas pump symbol) goes off within a few seconds of starting the car. In the GCC-spec models popular here, like the Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, or Toyota Camry, this audible click from the ratcheting mechanism is a clear sign of a secure seal. According to the RTA Dubai's vehicle inspection guidelines, a faulty or loose fuel cap is a common reason for initial test failure because it allows fuel vapors to escape, increasing emissions. The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure also notes that a poorly sealed fuel system can lead to evaporative losses, especially in summer temperatures above 45°C where fuel volatility is higher. For a typical family sedan like a Camry driving 25,000 km a year in UAE conditions, a loose cap causing a 5% drop in fuel efficiency from 14 km/l to 13.3 km/l using Special 95 fuel means an extra cost of about 350 AED annually just in wasted fuel, not accounting for potential premature fuel pump strain from excess vapor in the system.

After getting fuel at an ADNOC station on Sheikh Zayed Road, I always turn the cap until it clicks three times—my 2022 Hilux does that. If I forget, the orange engine light comes on before I even reach Dubai Marina. A quick stop, reopen and close it properly, and the light vanishes after about 10 km of driving. It's a routine check now, especially before a desert trip.

In my garage in Al Quoz, I see this often. The customer complains about a fuel smell inside the car after parking in the sun. Nine times out of ten, it's the petrol cap not fully engaged.
